By 1985 he was investigating the possibilities of further training. In fact, it was nearly ten years before Roger entered on a further course of study.

The range of interests expressed by his books was enormous. Sometimes he inscribed them ‘from Roger Cecil to Roger Cecil’ or ‘a gift to myself’.

He had numerous ‘how-to’ manuals, not only on printmaking, the patination of metals, silversmithing and jewellery but on bonsai, stone walling, cookery, caving, navigation, the tea ceremony… There were books on modern architecture, Eastern philosophy and ancient and modern erotic art.
